Ayurveda and the Mind

Sep 25, 2018

While many believe Yoga to be a series of physical postures and poses, it’s actual function – as described by the Vedas has always been to facilitate the self-realization of an individual. This is why yoga’s sister science Ayurveda, mapped psycho-spiritual predilections as a way of supporting the individual on their path towards self- realisation. Did you know your constitution might reveal your psychological and spiritual tendencies?

Here are a few key points to remember regarding your divine mindset:

Vata

As you are composed of air and ether, you are considered closest to the divine elements, and the sacred heart of the cosmic nature. Vata also governs the whole nervous system and the brain. In the Vedas: this is the system in the body that is interconnected with the chakras and nadis, and thus accountable to the awakening process; you can happily live a very spiritual life.

What holds you back is: lack of routine and ritual, anxiety about life’s uncertainties keeps you from practising devotion.

Pitta

As you are composed of fire and water, you are considered to be in attunement with the manifestation principle of the divine. You are empowered by the grand transformation principles of the universe. Your spiritual nature is bright, seeking and intelligent.

What holds you back is: a lack of compassion. The toughest work for you on the spiritual path is to surrender your ego, your judgments, and your arrogance.

Kapha

As you are composed of earth and water, you are considered well connected to the physical realities of the world: maybe too much. Your five senses serve you well and you have both feet on the ground when it comes to the daily practical needs of living in the world. The natural world holds a beautiful material fascination for you.

What holds you back is: your relationship with desire, and attachment. Possessiveness towards anything, especially dogmas, will overburden your spirit. Change is hard for you. The best thing for you to do is learn to let go.

Knowing your constitution and working to bring it into balance is immensely helpful in facilitating your optimal physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. If you don’t yet know your constitution (dosha) relax! You can always take this quiz to get you on your way before consulting an experienced Ayurvedic doctor.
