What Kind of Clothes Should You Wear For Yoga?
Aug 09, 2024When choosing clothes for yoga, it's important to consider how they affect your energy flow and comfort during practice. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
1. Wear Loose-Fitting Natural Fibers
- Traditionally, yoga clothing in India consists of unstitched garments like dhotis for men and saris for women, allowing for unrestricted energy movement. Modern yoga practitioners don't need to go to these lengths, but your clothing should be loose and comfortable allowing your body to move.
- Avoid tight or synthetic clothing as this restricts the movement of your energy. Instead, opt for undyed organic fabrics such as cotton, linen, hemp, wool, or raw silk. These natural materials will not only allow your body to breathe well and allow your energies to move but are also healthier as they do not contain the microplastics and other nasties that lead to an array of health issues.
2. Remove Objects From Your Body
- All objects, especially metal accessories, such as jewellery should be removed before your yoga practice as it's electromagnetic waves will create a certain circulation around itself. Sadhguru says, "If you put any object on your body, it will tend to disturb the free movement of energy. Except for a few parts of the body that are dormant, like the earlobes, any kind of metal should be removed – even nose studs".
- Glasses must be removed when practicing yoga and if you wear contact lenses, consider practicing without them whenever possible, as this can also help improve your vision over time.
3. Rudraksh and Specific Items
- While it's advisable to remove most metal objects, certain items like a Rudraksh or a Snake Ring are exceptions. Rudraksh can support your energy field, and the snake ring can offer specific protective benefits in rare circumstances during certain practices.
4. Plastic Over Metal Clips
- Ladies, if you are using any kind of metallic clips on your spine like your bra, try to opt for plastic instead. Plastic is a better option than metal simply because it does not interfere with the movement of energy as much.
5. Connection with the Earth
- Practicing yoga on a cotton mat means you have a connection with the earth. Modern yoga mats are plastic or rubber which insulates you from this connection however, they do offer better grip than their cotton counterparts which can prevent injury if you are prone to slipping. If you are practicing on a rubber/plastic mat and also wearing rubber sole shoes all day long, at lease spend some time each day barefoot on the earth - you could go for a beach walk or simple lay on the grass.
The main goal is to minimise any restrictions or interferences with the natural flow of energy. This allows you to reap maximum benefits from your practice.

Sharol xx
